Witch on the Run

In my dreams I'm running,
always running,
legs and lungs on fire,
aching with the effort of desperation.

Sometimes I'm naked; sometimes I'm clothed.
Sometimes I'm inside a house
that exponentially expands as I run;
sometimes I'm outside somewhere,
never anyplace I recognize,
but always under a dystopian light
that colors the madness
with another layer of fright.

I never know exactly what it is
I'm trying to escape.
I only know that whatever it is,
if I'm caught I'm dead.

And so I run,
panting, stumbling, almost weeping,
looking over my shoulder
in the panic of the pursued.
When I waken from these dreams
I'm exhausted, as if I never slept.
I lie in bed waiting for my heart
to stop pounding; I wonder why I run.
