Description
WHITEHALL MERCANTILE by PRISCILLA BURGERS
Whitehall Mercantile occupies a two-story building in Halltown, Missouri on historic Route 66 - "Mainstreet USA." Built in 1900, the building housed a general store and post office on the ground floor. The upper story was the hall for the I.O.O.F. Lodge. The Rebekahs and the Masonic Lodge met there as well. It was truly a social hub for the community and surrounding area.
Three quarters of a century later, the old building was given a new life. A year before retiring as a school teacher and librarian, Thelma White opened Whitehall Mercantile in 1985. Income from the store supplemented her teacher's pension, but more importantly, she enjoyed the people who stopped again and again to visit and to shop along historic Route 66. From 1985 to 2005 Thelma ran the store and also accompanied Jerry on buying trips. In 2006 she was ready to retire and began cutting back her hours. Then in December 2007, she suffered a stroke and was no longer able to run Whitehall Mercantile. Jerry took over the operation of the store with one part-time worker, Dixie Dameron. Whitehall Mercantile hadn't changed much through the years. It was still packed to the rafters with unique items and bargains when Jerry had to close the store for health reasons. It is sad that another charming store on Route 66 is no longer in operation.

Very well done image; great capture of historical essence in colour and texture. I've travelled Historic Route 66 but never that far into Missouri. Love your story too.
