Description
"Welcome to Texas Sign" by Catherine Sherman.
This "Drive Friendly - the Texas Way" Texas sign welcomes drivers on Highway 54 as they enter Sherman County in Texas from the Oklahoma Panhandle. The sign sits on the border of the divided town of Texhoma. In the background are grain elevators.
The Sherman County seat is Stratford. The county was created in 1876 and organized in 1889. It is named for Sidney Sherman, who fought in the Texas Revolution.
Texhoma is a divided city with the Texas-Oklahoma state border separating the city from Texhoma, Oklahoma. It is also the northernmost settlement in the entire state of Texas. Founded around the Rock Island Railroad laying tracks through the area, much of Texhoma's local economy is from ranching and livestock.
