Description
This painting was inspired - in part - by the dangerous mountain pathway known as ''The Striding Edge of Helvellyn'' high up in the beautiful English Lake District. It is a very narrow path running along a knife like ridge with extremely steep slopes on either side. I combined this with some imaginative thinking to invent a further episode of Sir Galahad's quest for the Holy Grail. My addition to the legend puts Sir Galahad in a far away kingdom. He has helped to remove various bands of robbers and trouble makers from what is usually a pleasant kingdom. The old king is most grateful and wishes to assist Sir Galahad. On learning of the knight's quest, he tells him that to go through the next country would be most unwise because it is a country in turmoil with evil barons engaged in continous fighting. The king has only one suggestion and that is for Sir Galahad to use the secret mountain pass called the ''Striding Edge''. However, he cannot say exactly where it will lead to because nobody has ever returned to tell the story.
