Description
Waiting on Shore
"The dead are not far from us...... they cling in some strange way to what is most still and deep within us " W.B. Yeats
The "Waiting on Shore" monument, appropriately situated near the RNLI lifeboat station, depicts a woman holding her arms out to sea. This sculpture reflects the age-old anguish of a seafaring people who watched and waited for the safe return of loved ones.
It is to honour the memory of those who sailed, or were lost at sea, that this woman, cast in bronze, stands:
"Lost at sea, lost at sea
Or in the evening tide
We loved you, we miss you
May God be with you abide".
