Description
Wacahoota Methodist Church(Ind.,cow pen) was the site of the Mission Francisco De Potano, established in the first years of the 17th century and visited by Fray Luis Ore in 1616. Bloody attacks on Francisco were made by Indians who swooped down from the Carolinas in the latter half of the century. In 1704 ex-Governor James Moore of Carolina raided the region, burning and looting; he put to fire and sword those who resisted, and sold into captivity all who surrendered. Fort Wacahoota was built in this vicinity and garrisoned during the Seminole Wars. No traces remain of the fort or the older mission.
