Description
Venereal disease in AIDS. Genitals of a man from Africa with the sexually transmitted disease lymphogranuloma venereum. This is an infection by the Chlamydia trachomatis bacterium. It has caused the lymph glands in the groin to swell (pink area, top right), and there are also open sores on the man's foreskin. The condition is made worse by the man having AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome), caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This weakens the immune system, which leaves the patient susceptible to opportunistic infections and makes normally harmless infections life threatening. Both these diseases are common in tropical Africa.
