Description
This statue of Ulysses S. Grant is at the western base of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. General Grant, who is credited with winning the Civil War for the Union, was later elected President and served two terms from 1869 until 1877. This lofty statue of Grant on horseback is the centerpiece of a large memorial that includes four bronze lions and sculptures of soldiers in battle. The memorial was built over a twenty year period in the early 1900s, and was dedicated on April 27, 1922, the 100th anniversary of Grant's birth.
