Description
Trichomonas vaginalis, parasitic protozoan that causes trichomoniasis (vegetative phase called trophozoite), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This protozoan is the cause of sexually transmitted vaginitis or trichomoniasis. This organism possesses whip-like flagella, which enable it to move around. It infects the genito-urinary tract of both sexes. In men this is often symptomless, but in women it causes painful inflammation of the vagina (vaginitis). Transmission is commonly, but not exclusively, through sexual intercourse. The infection can be treated with the drug metronidazole. Magnification: x1,400 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
