Description
Rousseau worked as a clerk collecting taxes on goods brought through one of the gates in the Paris city walls. But the landscape around this toll-gate must be partly imaginary, and the vegetation seems to invade the buildings. Rousseau liked to paint invented landscapes in bright green tones; his jungle pictures were inspired by Paris’s Jardin des Plantes. As an artist, Rousseau was self-taught. His personal, naïve style was mocked by some contemporaries, but acclaimed by Picasso and other members of the avant-garde.
