Description
Canada Thistle, Ciresium arvense (L) Scoop, of the Composite family;
Flowers - pink-purple or ocassionally white, 12-25mm (1/2 to 1 inch) wide, with disk florets only, usually male across, or female on one plant, more or less numerous, on spineless stalks in open, spreading clusters.
Fruit - flattened, ribbed arhenes, 4 mm (1/8 inch long) with pamppus of brownish to white feathery bristles.
Leaves - alternate, lance shaped, 5-15 cm long (2 to 6 inches) long spiny-toothed, deeply lobed to wavy along the edges.
Growth Environment - roadsdes, fields, waste places and cultivated fields, in good moisture conditions.
Captured on the shore of Lake Devonian, southwest of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
