Description
An old friend saw this thinking it's a self-portrait. It's not. Or maybe it is--isn't every portrait a self-portrait? Anyway, it's a narrative scene of a close couple. Seems the man has either a letter from his lover in his hand about which he need to make a reply, or perhaps it's a letter to her he�s pondering over--whether to give it to her or not. I suppose smoking his cigarette is a way of passing time before the decision, or a stimulant toward helping him make his decision.

I like this painting. It feels there is a story behind it, but nothing in description. I was thinking that the story could add to the picture.
