Open Window
The unseen door is locked;
there is a casement set
in chiselled Gothic stone
hanging high above the springgreen
of the lightly-wooded lawn below.
One panel open wide, one frozen shut -
it is my double window; it is my dual nature.
I've been longschooled in deportment
but that is just the shell, the outer skin
of cold blue frost that greets the stranger.
There's nothing here for just the taking;
you must prove yourself a worthy man.
If you are invited, brave and sturdy soul,
throw your hook high to my rough ledge
and haul yourself inside,
where a different sort of grapple you'll encounter.
For you, the long-awaited, burns a fire
hotter than your thickened blood when coming.
If you can bear the flame without a flinch
my window will be open to you always.
