The movie is based on the novel of the same name by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall, which is inspired by a true story of a devastating hurricane that struck the South Pacific island of Tahiti in 1928.

The story centers around Terangi, played by Jon Hall, a young native fisherman who is wrongfully accused of assaulting a white man and is unjustly sentenced to prison. As Terangi endures harsh treatment and struggles to prove his innocence, his wife Marama, portrayed by Dorothy Lamour, remains steadfastly devoted to him, believing in his innocence and waiting for his return.
