Description
The Governors Palace, along with The Capitol and the Wren Building, is one of the three most recognizable landmark buildings of Colonial Williamsburg. The current Governors Palace is a faithful reconstruction of the original palace completed in 1722 which served as a home to eight Royal Governors of Virginia including Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson. It was being used as a hospital for wounded soldiers from the American Revolution when it was destroyed by a fire at the end of 1781. It was subsequently rebuilt according to the original plans and on the same site beginning in 1930. Much exhaustive research went into both its rebuilding and in restoring the interior decoration over the next half-century.
