Description
Base painting for the vintage movie poster ''The Gold Rush'', a 1925 silent comedy film written, directed, and starring the iconic Charlie Chaplin. It is considered one of Chaplin's greatest works and a masterpiece of silent cinema.
The film is set during the Klondike Gold Rush of the late 19th century and follows Chaplin's iconic character, known as the Tramp, as he ventures into the Yukon territory in search of gold. Along the way, he encounters a host of colorful characters, including Big Jim McKay, played by Mack Swain, and Black Larsen, played by Tom Murray.
"The Gold Rush" is celebrated for its blend of slapstick comedy, visual gags, and heartfelt moments. Chaplin's physical comedy is on full display as he navigates the treacherous terrain of the Klondike, facing hunger, cold, and loneliness with his trademark charm and resilience.
One of the most iconic scenes in the film involves Chaplin's character preparing a Thanksgiving dinner for himself and his fellow prospector, Big Jim, using nothing but the contents of their makeshift cabin. The scene, in which Chaplin performs a balletic dance with two bread rolls as they transform into a pair of dancing feet, is often cited as one of the greatest moments in cinema history.
Directed with Chaplin's signature style and precision, "The Gold Rush" is a timeless classic that continues to enchant audiences over 90 years after its release. It remains a testament to Chaplin's genius as a filmmaker and performer, capturing the humor, humanity, and resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

About the artist:
Armando Seguso (Benevento, Italy, 1897 – Bronxville, New York, 1984) was an Italian-born American painter, illustrator, and musician.
His family immigrated to the U.S. when he was 4, settling in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He learned to play the violin and began a career as a musician by age 17. When he was 21, he moved to New York to study painting at the National Academy of Design. He paid his tuition by playing violin in a cabaret, vaudeville, and movie pit orchestras.
Seguso later took a position at a commercial art studio. His oil and brushwork technique, as featured on his poster for Buster Keaton's 1928 film Steamboat Bill, Jr., drew the attention of MGM's art director. He then worked primarily for MGM, illustrating with crayon, pastel, and watercolor. Some of his assignments included posters for Gone with the Wind (1939), Mrs. Miniver (1942), Random Harvest (1942), The Human Comedy (1943), Kismet (1944), Mrs. Parkington (1944), and Thirty Seconds over Tokyo (1944). For Paramount, Seguso designed posters for The Cat and the Canary (1939) and For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943).
His brilliant color and broad, vigorous technique also enlivened magazine covers including Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, and Woman's Home Companion.
