Description
"The Flight for Prey" photographed by Robin Erisman. I spend a lot of time unsuccessfully looking for owls, but on this day was blessed to not only see one owl but two. I was at James A Reed Wildlife Refuge in Lee's Summit, Missouri when I heard the owl and then noticed them in the tree. The barred owl resides along streams, ponds, lakes and swampy areas where there are trees. They mostly eat at night, but at times during the day, as was the case this day. The average size of a barred owl is 21 inches (tip of bill to tail); wingspan: 3 1/2 to 4 feet. These owls mostly eat small rodents, rabbits, frogs, snakes, insects, fish, and crayfish (this is what it caught when it landed). The barred owls courtship and breeding take place from February through March in Missouri. Two or three white, round eggs are laid in a tree cavity and incubation lasts 28 days, and the owlets are reared for 42 days.
