Highly melodramatic 1833 representation by French painter Paul Delaroche (of the execution of English noblewoman Lady Jane Grey, who found herself reluctantly and briefly made queen in 1533 due to an accident of birth. Sadly, circumstances saw her swiftly usurped by her cousin, Mary, who initially spared her life, but changed her mind after a rebellion was launched in Jane's support. Jane, who was only 17 years old a the time of her execution, went to her death bravely, but became distressed when she was unable to find the block, due to her blindfold. The painting shows this moment, and the assistance that was rendered by Sir Thomas Brydges, the Deputy Lieutenant of the Tower. That Jane - a beautiful and educated young women more interested in books than politics - should have been overthrown by Mary, who turned out to be a bit of a monster - remains one of the great tragedies of English history (along with Harold II of England losing to William of Normandy at the Battle of Hastings, b...
