Description
Imaged from rock near the detachment fault that cuts through the Catalina Mountains in Southern Arizona, this photograph illustrates the beginning of deformation that occurred as the upper block slid down over the lower block along the regional fault during crustal extension. Both brittle and plastic deformation reshaped the rock, allowing for silica super-saturated hydrothermal waters to infiltrate the fractures while minerals reoriented parallel to the direction of shear.
