Description
I took this photo on Golden Lane at Prague Castle because I liked what I was seeing. Only later did I discover that the brown door leads into one of the row of small houses built in the 16th century against the north wall of Prague Castle to house castle guards. Over the years servants, goldsmiths (hence Golden Lane), tradespeople and several writers including Franz Kafka, and the poor lived there. Sixteen of the houses have been restored, nine furnished as they would have been for people who once lived and worked in them. Seven are shops. One of the well-known residents was Madame de Thebes, a fortune teller whose sign with its owl and crystal ball can be seen on the wall. She was killed by the Gestapo near the end of World War II because she foretold the death of Hitler, or she died during interrogation, depending on what online source one reads.Copyright 2012 Ann Horn. Ann...I keep coming back to look at this...imagining myself as you when you saw it. It's so "different" with its lopsy curves and lines...but I see what intrigued you. I really love the way the limited colors play against one another! l/f/pod in Best of Minimalism group
