Dahlia
Family : Compositae (Asteraceae)
Cultivated species are named variabilis, distinguishing it from the wild forms of Mexico and Guatemala.
From midsummer through to the first frost, the dahlia blooms, from size small to dinner plate size, in every colour but blue. Its history is a proud one: Napoleon's Josephine planted the dahlia in her garden in France. After the Napoleonic Wars, it became the most popular plant in England and throughout the early 1800's, was the most popular plant across Europe.
There are 27 species of dahlia, which belong to the largest family of flowering plants (14,000 species). From these 27 species, over 57,000 forms have been cultivated.
The flower types of the dahlia are several: the chrysanthemum, the peony, the star, the pompon, the single flower, the anemone, the collerete, the waterlily, the Fimbriated, the double orchid, the formal decorative, the ball, the cactus, and the semi-cactus.
The dahlia is the national flower of Mexico. The early Aztecs used to eat the tubers for food.

My wife Janet said that your flower photos makes her wish that she was Thumbelina so that she could hide away within them.....A great escape from life's challenges at times! She loves your work and so do I................FAV / Like
Connie Handscomb replied:
Hello to you Both! Janet, what a lovely thing to say! I love Thumbelina, too, & you're welcome to curl up inside my blooms any time ... :) One of the nice things about macro photography is that it allows me to "be" Thumbelina whenever I look through the lens. Thank you, Jerry & Janet, for being the wonderful souls that you are :)))
