Description
The big house built of adobe bricks in New Mexico's old town of Taos Pueblo is still occupied.
These houses are built in the traditional style of sun baked mud bricks, called adobes, and fortified with wooden beams. This structure is several stories high, housing many families, although smaller, individual houses are also scattered throughout this native village. The upper levels are reached by ladders.
Situated at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains which can be seen in the background.
Today about 150 Taos people live here, maintaining the structures and operating the site as a tourist destination during the day.
There is the remains of an old Spanish mission with a cemetary on the premises, and a Christian church that still serves the spiritual needs of the people.
There is also an intact traditional round "kiva" or gathering place which was used by the original inhabitants for meetings and a place worship.
Some exquisite hand made pottery and crafts can be purchased at the local houses, which serve as souvenir shops.
Taos Pueblo is a living, breathing native village a few miles outside Santa Fe. The local Taos Indians even perform shows of indigenous dancing, singing and drum beating at various places around Santa Fe. A totally educational, entertaining, and inspirational place.
