A shimmery, romantic view of the Connecticut River from the back courtyard of Gillette Castle, aka Seventh Sister, in East Haddam, Connecticut. This magnificent landmark was designed as his personal residence by the famous actor William Gillette, who introduced American audiences to Sherlock Holmes on the stage. The castle sits at the top of the most southerly hill of a chain known as "The Seven Sisters."
Designated as a Connecticut State Park, Gillette Castle is a popular tourist destination as well as a beloved icon in the state. The extensive grounds are home not only to the castle, but also to an impressive koi pond and the remains of Gillette's own personal miniature railroad line, appropriately named the Seventh Sister line. The restored steam locomotive that pulled the train was unveiled in October 2007.
Gillette personally oversaw every detail of the castle's construction and had very definite ideas as to its design. For instance, of the forty-seven doors inside, no two are alike. His unique vision resulted in a truly one of a kind legacy that is now open for the public to enjoy.
