Description
The steamer Lemoyne was built by the Midland Shipbuilding Company in Midland, Ontario in 1926. She was originally named Glenmohr, but before she entered service the vessel was renamed Lemoyne, as the fleet of the Great Lakes Transportation Company Ltd. had just been absorbed by Canada Steamship Lines Ltd. of Montreal. With her dimensions of 621.1' x 70.2; x 25.4' at the time of commissioning she was the largest ship on the Great Lakes. The Lemoyne set many different cargo records and was chosen to participate in the ceremonies which were held on August 6, 1932 to mark the official opening of the fourth Welland Canal with Captain C.E. Robinson as her Captain. The grand old lady set another record when she was the first laker of more than 600 feet in length to be scrapped. Lemoyne along with the Goudreau, cleared Quebec City in tow of the tug Koral on June 9, 1969. She arrived at Santander, Spain, on June 27, 1969, and was soon dismantled.
