Description
Steller`s sea eagles (Haliaeetus pelagicus) breed along the Pacific coast of north-eastern Russia. Most of them migrate south in the winter to the southern Kuril Islands and Hokkaido, Japan. They inhabit the seacoast, lakes, marshes and up to 100 km inland up major rivers.
Stellers sea eagles massive nests are built on cliffs (often near seabird colonies), whilst inland, the species will utilise large pine trees near rivers or lakes. Their diet varies by location, with fish and seabirds being favoured. Small to medium-sized mammals and carrion (dead animals) are also eaten.
Adult Stellers sea eagles are characterised by their dark brown to black plumage with prominent white tail, shoulders, thighs, forehead, and usually crown. Females are heavier, weighing up to 20 lbs (9kg) with the male a lighter 13 lbs (6 kg). Among the largest of all eagles, their wingspan is up to 8 feet (~2.5 m).
