Description
On the outskirts of Burnley, a town once dominated by the textile industry, lies Queen Street Mill. The last operational steam-powered weaving mill in the world, in its Victorian heyday it specialised in producing plain calico cloth. The machinery has been preserved in full working order, including the Lancashire looms, boilers and a steam engine named Peace.
The Mill was producing cloth until its closure in 1982. Now it is a perfect time capsule of Victorian manufacturing, bringing the past to life and telling the story of cotton cloth production, offering insights into local social history along the way.
