Artist's Description
Staithes is a seaside village in North Yorkshire, England. Formerly one of the largest and most productive fishing centres in England by the North Sea, Staithes is now largely a tourist destination thanks to its picturesque appearance.
At the turn of the 20th century, there were eighty full time fishing boats putting out from Staithes (or Steers as it is known by the locals). A hundred years later there is only one. Still a father and son fishing operation, three generations of the Hanson family currently work the lone full time fishing boat. There is a long tradition of using the coble (a traditional locally made fishing vessel) in Staithes.
In 1745-1746, Staithes�s most famous resident, the young James Cook (born in Marton near Middlesbrough), worked in Staithes as a grocer�s apprentice where he first gained his passion for the sea. I have been a keen photographer since childhood, have worked in photography all my life on the lab side. I work with picture libraries and main themes are landscapes, travel & railways. My images date back to the early 1970s and many were made with transparency film which has been professionally processed & scanned. I was born in London and moved to Germany in 1979. As many shots were taken on return visits to the UK, I was able to see with both the eyes of a tourist and a native. I exhibited canvas prints of my work in Stralsund, Northern Germany in 2005.
