Description
St. Peter's Basilica as seen from St. Peter's Square at night in the Vatican. This building is the largest church in the world when measured by internal space, and was designed primarily by four great Renaissance architects, Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno and Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
Construction was begun in 1506 and was completed in 1626. It was initially planned by Pope Nicholas V and then Pope Julius II to replace the aging Old St. Peter's Basilica, which was built in the fourth century by Roman emperor Constantine the Great at this same site. The entire Vatican City is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
