Description
St Paul the Apostle is the patron of my religious community, the Daughters of St Paul, so I especially wanted to create an updated image which reflects in some ways the traditions of images of St Paul. The symbols of St. Paul's martyrdom rest above his head. Carrying the Bible (symbolic of his being a writer of Sacred Scripture), Paul gestures to his heart, as if to say "Christ lives in me." St John Chrysostom wrote, "The heart of Paul is the heart of Christ."
The Latin inscription in the lower part of the frame reads "St Paul Apostle and Martyr." The bench features a depiction of Fathers and Doctors of the Church who were eminent disciples of St. Paul. This depiction itself is an homage to the work commissioned by Blessed James Alberione for the St Paul altar of the Roman Basilica of Mary, Queen of the Apostles.
