Description
Havelberg is a town in the district of Stendal, in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.
It was founded in 946 as the Bishopric of Havelberg. It was part of Brandenburg for most of its history, but when the German States were dissolved in East Germany in 1952, Havelberg became part of the district of Magdeburg. The German States were refounded during the German reunification in 1990.
Havelberg is located near the confluence of the Elbe and Havel rivers.
The St. Marys cathedral is considered the Grandest Cathedral on the Romanesque Route. It is the biggest attraction in Havelberg, built almost 950 years ago and was the second cathedral built at this site. The plain outside of the cathedral belies the stunningly beautiful interior.
