Description
Very early morning shot of one of the quaint shops that line the Historic River Street of Savannah Georgia. This popular area of town was once home to the warehouses of the King Cotton company and runs parallel to the Savannah River. Train tracks for the trolley run through the cobblestone streets in front of the shops and restaurants.
Abandoned for over a century after a yellow fever epidemic and subsequent quarantine of 1818, this area became a huge tourist draw after undergoing a tremendous revitalization in the 1970's.
Landowners and urban developers were determined to revive the history of this area and a 7 million dollar project was underway in 1977. Over 80,000 sq ft of warehouse space transformed into 70 plus businesses, specialty shops, restaurants and art galleries. I'd say this was an investment that turned out extremely well. This is a key area of Savannah that just can't be missed when you are visiting.
