Artist's Description
Tracheal epithelium. Scanning electron micrograph of a section of the epithelium of the trachea (windpipe). It consists of a layer of pseudostratified ciliated cells (seen here as green grass-like hairs) interspersed with goblet cells which are covered by microvilli, seen here as small yellow protuberances. Goblet cells synthesise mucus, a viscous fluid, which is secreted through the microvilli and in which tiny particles in inhaled air are trapped. The ciliated cells move the mucus upwards and out of the respiratory tract keeping the lungs and airways free. Magnification: x3570 at 6x7cm size.
