Description
A view of part of the Sandeman wine and port company cellar and shop in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. Vila Nova de Gaia is on the south bank of the Douro River, opposite the better known neighbouring city of Porto / Oporto on the north bank. It is where many of the port producing companies have their storage cellars / warehouses and outlets, tours of these are one of the main attractions for tourists visiting Porto. Sandeman is one of the better known brands of port and sherry wines and was founded in 1790 by the brothers George and David Sandeman from Perth, Scotland. It remained a family business until the drinks company Seagram bought it in 1979. It was later sold to Diageo and Pernod Ricard then in 2001 to Sogrape; a descendant, George Thomas David Sandeman is still a board member.
