Description
"Sally Lightfoot Crab, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador" by Catherine Sherman.
A brightly colored and speckled Sally Lightfoot crab (Grapsus grapsus) scrambles over volcanic rocks along the coast of an island in the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador.
Grapsus grapsus is one of the most common crabs along the western coast of the Americas. It is known as the red rock crab, or, along with crabs such as Percnon gibbesi, as the Sally Lightfoot crab. It is a scavenger, feeding mostly on algae.
The small crabs are thought to have been named after a Caribbean dancer, due to their agility in jumping from rock to rock, their ability to run in four directions and their capacity to climb up vertical slopes. This extreme agility makes them very difficult to catch.
Grapsus grapsus was collected by Charles Darwin during his voyages on HMS Beagle in 1835.
