Description
The morning started off sunny and gorgeous on January 4th, 1988 in Palmdale, California. After Col Phil Ford, Lt Col Mike Kenny, Maj Tom Loose and Capt Bill Foote enjoyed a fantastic breakfast at Crazy Otto's Diner, the crew headed over to the Rockwell Palmdale flight test area. After making final preparations accepting the B-1B Strategic Bomber Tail Number 86-0124 for the 384th Bomb Wing, the crew grabbed a quick weather briefing. They then headed out to the aircraft where photos were taken and the crew was introduced to their "ride" home. The aircraft had logged slightly over one flight hour in its acceptance flight from Rockwell to the USAF. A crew member remarked, "It was like taking it right off the showroom floor." After final flight checks, the crew took to the sky and headed for McConnell AFB, Kansas, where friends, family and press awaited the arrival of McConnell's 1st B-1B Strategic Bomber. The crew was very excited about the flight and the two-plus hour flight was uneventful -- the B-1B performed flawlessly! After a pass over McConnell AFB to show her off, the crew landed and deplaned onto a frigid ramp. The informal arrival festivities were very short because of the extreme cold, but now McConnell had its first assigned B-1B on station. All involved were excited about the day's significant events and the crew, jet and bomb wing were ready for an incredibly successful future. Limited Edition. Signed and Numbered by the Artist.
