Description
The main reason for stringing and hanging dried chili peppers (chile) in this way is to preserve them for later use in cooking. However, in the Southwest, ristras are popular decorator accents as well as being practical storage solutions. Here a string hangs from the overhead wood framing of a patio pergola in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The strong shadows cast by the midday sun create complex and interesting patterns on the stucco wall, and the bright red of the ristra contrasts nicely with the black and white background.
The image is also available in color in my The Southwest - New Mexico gallery.
