Residents collecting water, Hexham. Residents collecting water from a 'bowser' (water tank) after the River Tyne burst its banks and flood waters washed away the main water pipes to Hexham in Northumberland, England. Heavy rainfall on 8th and 9th January, 2005, resulted in severe flooding throughout northern England and southern Scotland. In Hexam, up to 10,000 homes were left withough water for five days. Emergency water tanks were set up and all water used for drinking and cooking had to be boiled.
