Red Eft Eastern Newt by Christina Rollo. Close up macro photograph of an Eastern Newt (Notophthalmus viridescens) in the red eft stage on a green fern leaf. The Eastern Newt also known as the Red Spotted Newt is one of the most common salamanders in eastern North America. Eastern Newts have three stages of life, the aquatic tadpole stage, the Red Eft or terrestrial juvenile stage, pictured here, and the aquatic adult stage. The Red Eft is bright orange red, with dark red spots outlined in black.
