Description
The Magnolia Warbler (Setophaga magnolia) is one of the most recognizable wood-warblers in North America. It measures about 5 inches in length and about 0.3 ounces in weight. The breeding male has a gray head, black mask, white wing bars, yellow throat, breast, belly, and flanks, with heavy black stripes on its underparts. It is a member of the family Parulidae; the Magnolia Warbler has no sub-species. It breeds in boreal forests in Canada and in northeastern areas in the United States (northern Great Lake states and New England). It migrates south through the eastern half of the United States, and winters in southern Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. Preferred foods include insects gleaned from vegetation, and occasionally fruit during migration. The Magnolia Warbler is uncommon in the western United States, and rarely spotted in the Los Angeles area!
This Magnolia Warbler was foraging for insects on vegetation near a pond was photographed in the morning at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve, in Los Angeles, California on 7-9-2021. I used a Nikon D850 camera body and a Nikon 500mm f/5.6 PF VR lens to capture this image. Settings: 1/2500 sec, f/6.3, ISO 2500. The insect it was consuming appears to be a Long-Jawed Orb Weaver spider. Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve located in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles was initially created in 1979 as a natural habitat for birds, small animals, and native plants and covered 48-acres; subsequent development of the Reserve resulted in expansion to include 225-acres. Much of the park was devastated by a fire on September 15, 2020, with destruction of about 70% of the plant life. Since then, living roots have resprouted to create new shrubs, some established trees have survived, and some birds, animals, and insects survived. It unfortunately will take much effort, resources, and time to be the natural habitat that it was previously.
I am honored that my photograph was featured in the Fine Art America groups:
