Description
"Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador" by Catherine Sherman.
A gorgeous sunset adorns the sky over the harbor of Puerto Ayora, a town on the island of Santa Cruz in the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador. This was a view from our upper patio, while we visited the islands.
This beautiful cloud display came right after a big rainstorm, which quickly came and went.
Puerto Ayora is the most populous town in the Galapagos with more than 12,000 inhabitants. The Galapagos are an archipelago of volcanic islands on either side of the equator in the Pacific Ocean. The islands are 563 miles west of continental Ecuador. The islands are known for their large number of endemic species, many of which were studied by Charles Darwin during the second voyage of the HMS Beagle. Darwin's observations, collections and analysis contribute to his theory of evolution by means of natural selection.
In addition to the Galapagos Islands, I've visited two other stops on Darwin's journey -- Tasmania and the Cape in South Africa.
