Description
Much has been written about this Door of San Esteban (Puerta de San Esteban) in the wall of the Mezquita-Cathedral in Cordoba Spain. Through this door one could access the prayer hall of the Primitive Mosque, built in the times of Abderraman I between in 785 (169 AH) and finished in 786 (170 AH). This door was one of the four entrances to the original mosque, known as Bab al-Wuzara' (the "Viziers' Gate", today known as Puerta de San Esteban) and was most likely the entrance used by the emir and state officials, who worked in the palace directly across the street from here. However, it was remodelled in the time of Muhammad I, in the 9th century. It has a lintelled doorway over which there is a blind horseshoe arch constructed of alternating brick and stone decorated with vegetable elements. Even the inner curve of the arch is decorated. The historic value of the arch lies in the inscription of kufic characters which go along the inner curve of the arch and the horizontal part above the door. It reads “: “In the name of Allah, Most Graceful, Most Merciful. The Emir (blessed by Allah) Muhammad ben Abderraman commanded to build the… of this Mosque and its foundations (Allah’s mercy be with him and accompany him). And it was completed… the year two and forty one (241 of the Hegira and 855 AD) with Allah’s blessing and his fortunate protection“. Its relevance lays in its date, the year 855, which means this is the oldest inscription in the building.
