Description
A Cactus Bee (Diadasia rinconis) is embracing the stigma of a Long-Spined Prickly Pear (Opuntia macrocentra) cactus flower in the Tucson Mountains west of Tucson, Arizona. This cactus is typically the first of the prickly pears to bloom in spring with its small but distinctive, red centered flower.
This photograph was made the very first day these cactus began to bloom in 2022, and immediately both the Cactus Bee and other Sweat Bees were feeding and pollinating these beautiful flowers. In researching the identity of this particular bee I discovered that there are over 1,300 different species of bees in the State of Arizona. My thanks to the Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum for their assistance in identifying this insect.
