Description
A cactus that was originally introduced to Hawaii for cattle containment. It did very well and eventually spread quite abundantly to cattle grazing areas. Not what the ranchers had originally intended or anticipated. A caterpillar was brought in which feeds on the plant and weakens it until it eventually dies. I don't see many around anymore so apparently the strategy is effective. Nonetheless this plant produces a beautiful blossom and an interesting plant form...
Photographed in pasture land outside of Waimea, Hawaii.
