Description
Philippe Lebon (1767-1804), French engineer. This bronze statue was unveiled on 26 June 1887 by the Technical Gas Society of France. The statue is located in the town of Chaumont, Haute-Marne departement, near Lebon's birthplace of Brachay. The sculptor, Antide Pechine, has shown Lebon with a flame rising from a flask of sawdust that he has heated. This discovery of wood gas led Lebon to invent a gas lighting system, patented in 1799. Lebon, who also worked on engines, was found stabbed to death five years later. Artwork from the first volume (first period of 1888) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
