The American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) is a large pelican that breeds in the interior lakes of North America and migrates along the Pacific coast to winter in California, Mexico and Central America. It measures about 62 inches in length and about 16.4 pounds in weight. It is tied with the Trumpeter Swan for the greatest length of any North American bird, and has the second greatest wingspan, after the California Condor! Its plumage is mostly white. Its bill is large with a throat sac underneath. The bill, sac, and bare skin around the eye are bright orange in breeding season. The American White Pelican doesn't dive for fish but catches its prey while swimming in groups and corralling prey. Besides eating fish, it also consumes amphibians and crustaceans.
