Description
A head on view of EMD F40PH diesel-electric locomotive number 1857 taken at Colon station at the Caribbean end of the Panama Canal Railway. These locomotives were built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division from 1975 to 1992, mainly for use on Amtrak's short-haul passenger routes. PCRC 1857 was originally numbered AMTK 313 and operated by the Kansas City Southern Railway.
The Panama Canal Railway is 47.6 miles / 76.6 km long, crosses the isthmus from Balboa (near Panama City) to Colon and started operations in 1855. It was upgraded significantly between 1904-1912 when the USA was bulding the Panama Canal, and handed over to Panama in 1979 along with the Canal. After years of decline the railway was taken over by the private Panama Canal Railway Company (PCRC), a joint venture between Kansas City Southern and gantry crane manufacturer Mi-Jack Products. They rebuilt the railway so it could handle container traffic and it re-opened in 2001, it also offers a daily passenger service that has become a popular tourist attraction as well as being used by commuters.
