This trio of purplish-pink moth orchid blooms on a gracefully bent stem was displayed in a corner. Many wonderful species of orchids are usually blooming in The Botanical Building in Balboa Park in San Diego, California. Balboa Park was named for Spanish maritime explorer Vasco Nunez de Balboa. and is one of the oldest and best parks in the United States. I changed the beige wall to green to make this a one-of-a-kind floral shot.
The Greek myth of Orchis explains orchids' origin. Orchis, the son of a nymph and a satyr, came upon a festival of Dionysus (Bacchus) in the forest. He drank too much, and attempted to rape a priestess of Dionysus. For his insult, he was torn apart by the Bacchanalians. His father prayed for him to be restored, but the gods instead changed him into a flower. Orchids are one of the largest families of flowering plants.
