Orangutan, 19th-century artwork. The orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus and Pongo abelii) consists of two species of great ape found in Borneo and Sumatra. In the 19th century only a few specimens were brought to Europe or the USA, and it wasn't until the 1920s that zoo populations were established. Most orangutans brought to the West in the 19th century were infants that did not survive to adulthood. Here, the orangutan is being fed, showing the dexterity of its feet which are being used to grasp a spoon. Artwork from the 13th volume (first period of 1894) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
