Description
Supernova SN 1987a in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), photographed on March 7, 1987, from Siding Spring Observatory, New South Wales, Australia. The wide-angle photograph shows a large part of the southern sky, including the Milky Way running across the top part of the picture. Prominent in it are the dark region of the Coalsack Nebula (top left) & the pink of the Carina Nebula. The diffuse blue patch towards bottom right of the picture is the LMC, a nearby satellite of our own galaxy. The supernova is the brightest star in the upper right part of the LMC. The blue patch at bottom left is the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Pentax 6x7cm camera, 35mm f/4.5 fish-eye, Fuji 1400, exposure about 1 hour
