Opal, the birthstone of October is really a soft silicate that contains between 6 and 20% water .. mostly between 6 and 10%. In the middle ages, it was considered to have the powers and attributes of all the stones whose colors it possessed, In some cultures, it was even believed that, wrapped in a bay leaf, they could imbue the holder with invisibility. Here is displayed a common opal, some milk opals and a fire opal.
